Hilary Duff plays the title character in the interracial teen romance “Greta,” which is shooting on location in New Jersey.
Duff’s character is a waitress who falls for an ambitious cook (Evan Ross) at the restaurant where they work. But as their summer romance heats up, she has to overcome the concerns of her grandparents (Ellen Burstyn, Michael Murphy) about her boyfriend’s criminal past. The comic drama marks music-video veteran Nancy Bardawil’s feature directing debut.
Production of “Greta” is scheduled to be based in Asbury Park, Ocean Grove and Neptune for the next four weeks, according to Steve Gorelick of the New Jersey Motion Picture and Television Commission in Newark. “It’s being made in the $1- to $2-million-dollar range,” Gorelick said.
“Basically, the entire movie is being shot in Asbury Park and Ocean Grove so they can get a New Jersey tax credit,” he said. “You qualify for a tax credit if you spend 60 percent or more of your budget in the state of New Jersey.

In the complaint filed in Beverly Hills Superior Court and obtained by the celebrity Web site CelebTV.com, Andrew Rakos and Seth Rakos claim they attended a concert of Duff’s where a film crew blocked their view of the show.
The complaint reads “The defendant hired film crews at the performance with no prior warning and had film crew interrupt and ruin the ability for my family to see the show.
The plaintiffs are asking for $220 dollars in damages, according to the documents, to cover the cost of two tickets purchased on eBay, the price of parking for the event and expenses related to copying and mailing the complaint.

Multi-platinum recording artist and actress Hilary Duff was on hand to watch the preseason tilt between the Islanders and Rangers on Monday night.
Ms. Duff, a friend of Islanders center Mike Comrie, sat in the middle of the Coliseum crowd to catch all of the action close-up and she wasn’t disappointed. Along with a slew of fights and hard hits, Comrie also scored on the power play for a thrilling evening of hockey.
The pop sensation can be seen in such movies as “Cheaper by the Dozen,” “Lizzie McGuire” and a” Cinderella Story.” Her debut album “Metamorphosis” ascended to #1 on the Billboard charts and has sold more than two million copies.

Hilary Duff’s expectations were low when her hockey player beau Mike Comrie called recently to say he’d picked out an early 20th birthday present for her and that “I hope you like them.”
“Okay, it’s shoes or something,” Duff recalled thinking as she went to her sister’s house, where Comrie had said he left the present in the garage. “I opened the garage, and I was just like shocked, just standing there.”
Before her, with a big red bow on top, was a Mercedes-Benz G-class SUV (retail price: more than $100,000).
Duff, whose birthday is next week, told that at the Chanel and P.S. Arts Party at Chanel in Beverly Hills on Thursday that she had unwittingly put the idea for a new car in his head. Comrie, who plays for the New York Islanders, didn’t know what to get her: then one day he heard her talking about her transportation needs.
“I was planning on getting a big car and I drive a big car anyway, and I was just like, ‘You know maybe I like the G-Wagen,’ and then I was like, ‘No, maybe I like the [Porsche] Cayenne,’ ” says Duff, whose manager steered her away from the Porsche, reminding her that she was a “terrible driver” and “didn’t need that kind of power.”
“I’ve driven it tons,” Duff said of her birthday present. “When I called him I was like, ‘You’re crazy! It’s perfect!’ ”
So will the next present fit on her wedding finger?
“The rock?!” Duff said. “No, stop it!”

Nine years ago, two sisters from Houston were newcomers in Hollywood who had gotten their first breaks in made-for-video movies. Haylie Duff, 13, had a part in Addams Family Reunion, while Hilary Duff, 10, played the female title role in Casper Meets Wendy.
Cut to 2007, when Casper Meets Wendy is returning to DVD in a “Family Fun Edition” that boasts making-of materials and other new extras. But the real kick is seeing Hilary as a budding child actress.
Both sisters have become much bigger stars since then, especially Hilary, with claims to fame from pop albums, concert tours, TV’s Lizzy McGuire, films such as Cheaper By the Dozen and even a clothing line. But Haylie has risen, too, appearing in such film hits as Napoleon Dynamite and Material Girls, as well as TV’s 7th Heaven.
In 1998, they were grateful just to land their made-for-video roles, having struggled to get noticed in Hollywood’s crowded talent pool.
The girls’ mother, Susan Duff, told the Chronicle at the time that Casper’s filmmakers auditioned more than 200 children to play Wendy in the film about a girl witch and a boy ghost.
“It was grueling,” she said. “We went to at least five call-backs, and the last one was three and a half hours and had only four children. That was a tough one.”
But Hilary, hooked on Beanie Babies at the time, was resilient. She wasn’t even thinking about a showbiz career, saying she just wanted to act “a little bit.”
“I really want to be a veterinarian,” Hilary told the Chronicle. “I’m into animals. I guess I’ll keep acting, but I’m not sure yet. I’m just 10 years old!”
Haylie was more intent on getting a particular part. She’d auditioned for Dawson’s Creek, a gig she wound up not getting.
“I’d get to kiss (Dawson’s star) James Van Der Beek,” she said. “I love him!”
Having moved to Los Angeles with their mother, the girls said they missed their father, Bob Duff, as well as their home, their dogs and Hilary’s rabbit, Buns, back in Houston.
Their mother said the girls gave up “a lot to go out there.” But so did their parents, who maintained the long-distance family for years but eventually divorced.
Now life goes on for Hilary, 19, and Haylie, 22, who have found more of a career than they may have envisioned as kids.
“A lot of people give it one year in L.A. and then go home,” Haylie told the Chronicle in 1998. “But we’re having fun.”
“We’ve gotten used to it,” Hilary said. “It seems like home to us now.”

Hilary Duff is the one starlet people are routing for. The singer/actress/brand doesn’t drink and drive or get caught by paparazzi with no knickers on. She’s an upstanding, hard-working 19-year-old–Hil turns 20 in two weeks—who actually displays a little dignity, which just so happens to be the title of her latest album.
While the Texas native has been acting far longer than she’s been before a mic, the former Lizzie McGuire star has sold more than 13 million albums since 2002.
In 2005 alone, she reportedly earned $15 million from movies, music and auxiliary businesses, making her one of Forbes’ richest people under 25. But Duff still seemed pretty down-to-earth when she sat down at Toronto’s Air Canada Centre for an interview with AOL Canada a few hours before her concert, laughingly asking her army of handlers and publicists, “Are you guys all going to stay here?”
What do you think has enabled you, versus a lot of other people, to have two simultaneous successful careers?
Hard work, I guess. I think anything’s possible, so I’m a big dreamer and I work really hard and I have a great team of people around me that help keep me organized and keep me focused.
At one point your music was heading in an edgier direction with Most Wanted (2005), perhaps because of Joel’s influence (Madden of pop-punk band Good Charlotte, her then-boyfriend) and now it’s more dancey and pop. Are you still trying to find what your sound is?
I think it’s the other way around. My music before, the lyrics weren’t edgier, but the actual music was a little more rock-influenced. Then when we worked on music together, Joel and I, it was kind of dancey — ‘Beat of My Heart’ is like this techno song. It’s definitely pop, but it’s more dancey. Then the same with ‘Wake Up.’ After that is when I wanted to make more of a dance record and get away from that pop-punk sound.
So what would you want to do for the next one?
I always want to do something different. I was thinking about it the other day. I want to make a dual-sided record where I can make a dance record and then do an acoustic something because I crave both. I love all different kinds of music and I would love to get to do something really simple and lyric-driven with acoustic guitar, but also I love dance music.
Do you have any upcoming collaborations?
Not at this time. There’s one rapper that did a song with me. His name is Prophet and he’s from the Bay Area. He’s an up-and-coming rapper. I do this song on my tour called ‘Reach Out’ which is obviously a sample from Depeche Mode [the actual song is ‘Personal Jesus’] and it’s pretty cool. We’re going to be releasing that as a single soon.

While stars flocked to Las Vegas for MTV’s Video Music Awards, Hilary Duff hit the party scene in Toronto. The pop star visited downtown club This Is London with hockey player beau Mike Comrie (plus an entourage of 30). The couple cuddled and danced together all night long from their perch on the third-floor VIP section overlooking the dancefloor.

Pop princess Hilary Duff has gone from blond to bronde, adding sexier outfits on stage and almost adult heartaches to her songs.
None of which prevented a crowd of 5,200 fans, mostly preteen and tween girls and their faithful moms, from screaming their adoration to her at the John Labatt Centre last night.
Duff didn’t disappoint her young fans with lots of hits — Come Clean, Wake Up, Fly and So Yesterday were in the set list — to go with her four dancers and solid band.
“If you feel like standing up and dancing with me, nobody’s watching. It’s a good time. We’re in this together,” Duff said late in her 100-minute show. That observation produced screams, as did Duff’s other friendly stage chat even if she spoke so quickly it obviously took young ears to figure out what she said.
They had also screamed when the stage crew cleared the stage for Duff by removing the table equipment used by the MC and DJ combination who opened for the teen star. The duo’s job was to mention Duff’s name so many times this critic lost count. Each mention produced screams.
To go with the thousands of young fans, there were some older ones. They would have enjoyed her good choice of covers, The Go-Go’s Our Lips are Sealed and Pat Benatar’s Love is a Battlefield. One of those fans might have brought along the night’s best pop culture sign. It said: “Can’t Get Enough of that Wonderful Duff.” Hey, isn’t that Duff beer, the brew that keeps Homer Simpson so mellow?
Duff is touring to support Dignity (Hollywood/Universal), her fourth album. It provided the first two numbers last night with Play with Fire and Danger.
Duff’s visit was her third to the JLC. If memory serves, she dressed conservatively — slacks, sweater and a slouch cap — the first time around. Duff’s first outfit last night was pretty Britney — pre-meltdown Britney– for the Texas-born teen star with its glitzy short shorts and back-revealing top.
Her best look was a brownish ensemble with gold accessories she wore for the encore’s finale of Duff’s take on Depeche Mode’s Personal Jesus and Dignity’s Stranger.
Duff wore high heels in at least two styles for most of the show, but finally ditched the painful looking items and went barefoot for the encore’s finale, Stranger. Like Cher, the star this critic still insists is her role model, Duff’s a fine strutter who surrounds herself with hyperactive dancers and movers. That makes Duff look as if she’s on the move, too.
She also shows Cher-like determination to put the Duff brand in many zones from TV and films to music to fashion to perfume. The Duff brands came together, sort of, with her performance last night of With Love. That’s the name of her perfume.
Meanwhile, concert industry websites say legendary rocker Ozzy Osbourne and rocker/filmmaker Rob Zombie are playing the John Labatt Centre Jan. 19. “I have not yet seen a confirmation sheet for that date,” JLC marketing director Dave Harris said of that show.
